Our school’s medical doctor, Karoline Gsell, gave us a most interesting talk on Australia. She has family there and spent a year in Australia, so she shared many interesting experiences.
Australia is a beautiful continent with a rich history. The Aboriginal people, the first inhabitants, were very skilled in surviving in nature. Unfortunately, when white settlers arrived, many Aboriginal children were taken from their families, and their culture was damaged. Today, Australia is a parliamentary democracy and has a diverse population.
Australia celebrates its culture with many festivals. These include competitions like baking apple pies and growing giant pumpkins. At Easter, the Easter bilby brings the eggs, not the bunny. The climate often causes bushfires and flooding, so people sometimes find wild animals, like snakes, even in toilets. Australians are known for being brave in these situations.
Australia is a great place to visit. We hope Dr. Gsell comes again, and we can learn more about Australia, and maybe one day travel there ourselves.
